What is www.eDhamma.com? back to top
It is a web site run by a group of volunteers who wish to contribute to the propagation of the sasana by allowing free access to a wealth of Dhamma talks in Burmese and English. The name of the web site was chosen and registered at the time when the small "e" [meaning electronic or on-line] was an integral part of the names for web sites and software products.

Why do you say "a Thervada website"? back to top
This website complements other Theravada websites such as Nibbana.com and Tbsa.org. Our forte is a vast collection of dhamma talks and recitals that can be accessed by readers all over the world.

How did your web site evolve? back to top
A group of Myanmar Buddhist Families in the San Francisco Bay Area shared a common interest: their dedication to the propagation of sasana all over the world. When a member of the group receives a dhamma tape, s/he lets the others know. All the members believe that "Dhamma dana is the supreme gift". Some members have a vast collection of dhamma tapes in Myanmar and English. For tapes that allow FREE re-distribution, they have copied them and provided them to interested people. Several members also have donated computer systems and accessories to the resident monks in the Bay Area and also to visiting Sayadaws from Myanmar. At a "soon kyway" ceremony about a year ago, our Sayadaw urged us to work on promoting Theravada Buddhism through internet. The members brainstormed on how to make the dhamma talks, recitals of protective verses (parittas), etc. easily accessible on Internet. The idea was discussed time and again in person and via e-mails. With moral and monetary support from our members, we finally managed to launch edhamma.com. We now have posted nearly 40 tapes on the Internet.

How much does it cost to set up your web site? back to top
It costs us around US$ 10/tape/year to post on the internet. We have already received donation to post 60+ tapes for a year. We will gradually increase the number of tapes that we carry. We intend to set up our own server so that we can post as many tapes as we have in our dhamma library.

What is eDhamma Team? back to top
It is a group of volunteers dedicated to proprogate sasana by providing dhamma talks on the Internet. They are mostly from the San Francisco Bay Area in California, USA. They have offered their expertise, time and money (large or small).

How do you assign tasks in your team? back to top
We currently have
  • Three Sayadaws for tape selection
  • Editor in Chief
  • Editor (Brumese web pages)
  • Webmaster
  • Three audio engineers
Each person needs a computer system capable of digitizing, cleaning up, and archiving tapes.
  • Two Computer engineers
    Responsible for Hardware/Network/Assembly/Tech Support
  • Burmese word processing expert
  • Tape librarian for tape archive
  • Two treasures

How do you get and post the tapes? back to top
Several Sayadaws have given permission to use their dhamma talks on our web site. We have asked permission from relevant organizations and/or disciples of the late Sayadaws to use the dhamma talks on our web site. We have converted the audio tapes into a format that can be played by a "Real Player"; in the process, we have eliminated some background noise. We plan to post as many tapes as possible, but we need volunteers to help in the process of converting tapes in "Real Player" files of [reasonably] good quality. One generous donor has committed to provide us 500 tapes [different titles] of dhamma talks.

How do you collect the tapes? back to top
Some helped us in buying the tapes, passing through the inspection, and most of all, carrying the tapes from Burma to San Francisco Bay Area, USA. They are:
  • Daw Aye Than and family (Rangoon, Burma)
  • U Khin Maung Aye and family (Daly City, California)
  • Maung Thant Zin (Rangoon, Burma)
Many donors have also rented tapes to us. They include
  • Mettananda Vihara Monastery (Fremont, California)
  • U Hla Min (Sunnyvale, California)
  • U Lin Kyi (Sunnyvale, California)
  • U Myo Sint (Newark, California)
  • U Robert Thein (Union City, California)
  • U Yi Tin (Fremont, California)
  • .
  • Daw Htay Htay Kyi (San Jose, California)
  • U Kyaw Myint (San Jose, California)
  • U Nyan Mor (Alameda, California)
  • U Kyaw Zaw Tun (Fremont, California)
  • .
A team of three Sayadaws and a tape librarian screen and select tapes from the tape library. There are currently 100 tapes in our library, and the list is growing every day. Tapes by some sayadaws such as Ven. Sunlun Sayadaw and Weibu Sayadaw are very rare to find. If you have such tapes or a collection of tapes, please let us know so that we could propagate dhamma to others.

Do you need more volunteers? back to top
Yes. We need more volunteers to digitize and clean up the tapes that we have collected. Moreover, we are not only distributing, we are also building a digital tape library so that we could donate CD-ROMs each containing several tapes for those that have poor connection or no connection to the internet. That means a lot of work for us. We are looking for: Audio Engineers, Webmasters and Librarian for CD and tape archive.

How can I volunteer for the projects? back to top
