Biography:

Sayadaw U Kundalabhivamsa was born to U Tha Phyo and Daw Pu in Waw Township, Bago (Pegu) District, Myanmar in 1921. He became a novice monk (samanera) at the age of nine at the Waw Monastery. He studied at various learning monasteries including two renowned forest monasteries: Shwehintha Tawya and Maydhini Tawya.

Sayadaw received two titles of Dhammacariya (Dhamma Lecturership), the first in 1956 and the second in 1958. On the Golden Jubilee Independence Day of Myanmar (which fell on January 4, 1998, the 7th waxing day of Pyatho, 1359 M.E.), he received the higher title of Meditation teacher, Agga Maha Kammatthanacariya vide Union of Myanmar State Peace and Development Council Notification No. 2/98.

Sayadaw taught Buddhist Scriptures daily for 20 years to about two hundred monks at the Maydhini Forest Monastery. After having meditated under the tutelage of the late Venerable Mahasi Sayadaw for a year, Sayadaw started teaching vippassana meditation. He founded the Saddhamaransi Meditation Center in 1978. The center caters for an average of 200 yogis. The Saddhammaransi Meditation Center has three branches:

1) Sukhapatipada Sadhammaransi Meditation Centre at Kyaukkon, Yangon, founded in 1993. 2) Viveka-Tawya Saddhammaransi Meditation Center at Nyaunglebin, founded in 1994. 3) Khippabhinna Saddhammaransi Meditation Forest Meditation Center of Indyne, founded in 1995.

Sayadaw is also a prolific writer and has published several Dhamma books. He is a member of the Sangha Supreme Council of Advisors at the main Mahasi Meditation Center in Yangon. At the invitation of devotees world wide, Sayadaw has made Dhamma Duta missions to Singapore, United Kingdom, France, the United States, Australia, Japan, Thailand and Malaysia: to conduct meditation retreats and to give Dhamma Talks.
