Biography:

Shwe-Hin-Tha Sayadaw was born on December 14, 1893 at Lay-Myet-Nha, Henzada District. He was the fifth son of U Kyauk Sein and Daw Shwe Thaw. In 1907, he received his lower ordination as a novice under Mi-Kyaung-Ye Sayadaw and was known as Shin Pa-Du-Ma. In 1909, he was ordained for the second time. While studying in Moulmein, Sayadaw U Wayama renamed him as Ashin Buddha-Gawda. In 1911, while he was studying in Rangoon, Htan-Ta-Bin Sayadaw changed his name to Shin Pandita. In 1913, he received his full ordination as a bhikkhu under Min-Kaung Sayadaw at Thane-Daw -Gyi Sima Hall near Thane-Oo-Kaung. In the same year he was re-ordained at Sila-Vi-Taw-Dhami Sima Hall of of Shwe-Hin -Tha Taw-Ya. This Sama Hall was consecrated by one of the famous monks, Sayadaw U Sila. Since the time he entered the Buddha Sasana, he strictly observed and practiced according to the code of discipline for Buddhist monks. He studied Buddhist scriptures in Pali under famous learned Sayadaws in Moulmein, Rangoon and Mandalay. He resided at Shwe-Hin-Tha Taw-Ya for over ten years, first as a student monk, then as an instructor and finally as the resident monk.

After being a monk for 14 years, he decided to move to Sagaing Hills, hoping to improve his health and to practice the Dhamma by himself. In 1928, he founded Shwe-Hin-Tha -Gyaung, east of Sagaing Hill. The name of the monastery was chosen to reflect the link with Shwe-Hin-Tha Taw-Ya of Nyaungdon. The weather in Sagaing was conducive for his health; he regularly went for alms-round everyday and went on foot to Maha-Ganda-Yone-Gyaung on Sabbath days to join the assembly in observing Sabbath. His health improved drastically and he was able to devote more of his time for the perpetuation and propagation of Buddha Sasana.

In 1935, Sayadaw's disciples from Lay-Myet-Nha bought over 12 acres of land to the south of Shwe-Hin -Tha-Gyaung and laid the foundation for a new monastery and Sima Hall two years later. In 1940, Shwe-Hin-Tha Sayadaw along with 25 Sangas, spent their first Vassa at this Shwe-Hin-Tha Taik-Thit monastery.

Shwe-Hin-Tha Sayadaw is deeply interested in literature since his younger days. He used to write poems, verses and short stories in the Burmese papers, journals and magazines. He had published nearly thirty Dhamma books . For his valuable contributions to the Buddha Sasana, the government of Burma awarded him the AGGA MAHA PANDITA title in 1960 and ABIDAJA MAHA RATTHA GURU in 1979. He is the incumbent SUPREME CHIEF OF SHWEKYIN SANGA as well as STATE AWADA SARIYA OF BURMA SANGA. In spite of old age and being a monk for years Sayadaw was actively involved in the perpetuation and propagation of Buddha Sasana till he passed away in 1993.
